Yesterday we spent most of the day reviewing the gyros. The one that gave problems we changed the gasoline pumps, the air filter and the gasoline filter; with that it seems that the device has returned to be operative. We were assisted from Spain, via "WhatsApp", by our friend Ángel Malagón.
The other gyro, apart from cleaning, we changed the air filters, and the front wheel chamber that was punctured.
In this part of the country, most of the airfields we find have dirt tracks; a very fine red earth that, with the natural wind and that caused by the propellers of the engines, dirties the gyros very much. We suspect that this is the main cause of the problems one of them has suffered.
Repairs and other maintenance tasks are carried out from sunrise (5:30 am) to 10am, and from 3:30 pm to sunset (6pm). In the rest of the daylight hours, doing any job in the sun is unbearable (terrible sun, overwhelming heat and insufferable flies)

13 de octubre |
Today the 13th, the gyros took off from Roeburne around 6am. In anticipation of possible power failures, we decided not to load the nurse gyro with many fuel tanks. That forced us to carry out three stages; in the first we would do self-refueling, while in the second we should procure fuel. We chose the second stage stop at "Barradale", a roadhouse with a gas station as announced on the internet.
Roeburne con las primeras luces (Roeburne at sunrise) |
The first stage of about 135km was planned to finish at "Fontescue River" but it had to be at "Compressor Station One", 25km further, where we did the first refueling. The Fontescue track was unfeasible, looking like it had been abandoned a long time ago.
Compressor Stn One |
Compressor Station One looks like a plant where various pipes come together (water, gas, oil, ...?). Landed at the end of the runway farthest from the buildings, we refilled tanks and left. (The airfield runways, in line with everything else, are also huge; it's rare to find one less than a kilometer long.)
The 192km second stage was completed at Barradale.
Surprise one! The airfield was abandoned, not to say wiped off the map. What little fuel we had left to continue flying forced the landing on a short, narrow piece of runway that seemed acceptable. Landing without complications.
Surprise two! There is no gas station or anything at all. If there were facilities there it must have been a long time ago. It's just a roadside stop with tables (thankfully shady), ramshackle toilets, and garbage cans.
After about three hours, the ground crew supplied us with enough gasoline to finish the day. Takeoff went smoothly using the same piece of runway as the landing

Llegando a Coral Bay (Arriving at Coral Bay) |
After 135km, with a wind against 40km / h and in approximately an hour and forty minutes of very agitated flight due to the thermals, the day ended in Coral Bay at around 5pm.
